The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to shut down all pornographic websites accessible within the country.
This decision was reached during a plenary session on Tuesday, following a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, the representative of the Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency. Tafoki emphasized the need to protect societal values and curb the rising exposure to explicit content.
He argued that Nigeria, being a religious nation, should take decisive action against online pornography, as many countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have already imposed similar bans. He also highlighted concerns raised by experts about the negative psychological and social effects of pornography, linking it to issues such as addiction, promiscuity, and a shift in moral attitudes.
Following deliberations, the House adopted the motion and assigned its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance to oversee the enforcement of the directive. They are expected to report back within four weeks for further legislative review.
Additionally, Speaker Tajudeen Abass cautioned internet service providers against non-compliance, warning that penalties would be imposed on those who fail to adhere to the directive.
