Kebbi State in Northwestern Nigeria is facing the threat of possible flooding as the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning about the rising water levels of the River Niger. The agency’s concern follows reports of increased water flow from upstream activities in neighboring countries, particularly Niger and Mali, which have contributed to the heightened water levels entering Nigeria.
NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, highlighted the seriousness of the situation, citing data from the Niger Basin Authority (NBA) in Niamey, Niger Republic. The data indicates that floodwaters from Niger and Mali are gradually making their way towards Nigeria, raising concerns about potential flooding in Kebbi State and other regions along the River Niger. The situation is being closely monitored as these upstream activities have significantly contributed to the increased water flow into the country.

In response to the potential threat, NIHSA has taken proactive steps by alerting the operators of the Kainji and Jebba dams on the River Niger. These dams play a crucial role in managing the river’s water levels and are essential in flood prevention efforts. As of August 22, 2024, the dams have not yet started releasing water from their reservoirs, a measure typically taken to prevent the dams from exceeding their capacity. While this indicates that the situation is currently under control, the risk remains high as water levels continue to rise.
NIHSA has urged communities along the River Niger, particularly in Kebbi State, to remain vigilant in the coming weeks. The agency has pointed out that the period from the end of August through September poses the greatest risk for flooding, coinciding with the peak of the rainy season when rivers are at their fullest. NIHSA has assured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates to ensure that affected communities are well-prepared for any potential flooding.
