NIMC Takes Action Against Printing of NIN Cards, Confirms Only NIN Slip is Valid

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a directive to stop the printing of National Identification Number (NIN) cards, emphasizing that the NIN slip is the only official document for identity verification. The commission has alerted security agencies to take necessary action against individuals and organizations involved in this practice.

NIMC’s Official Statement on NIN Identification

In a statement released on Monday, March 24, 2025, and signed by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, NIMC clarified that no organization or individual has been permitted to print NIN cards. The commission stressed that only the upcoming General Multipurpose Card (GMPC) will serve as an official identification card.

According to NIMC, it has observed that some businesses and individuals are printing NIN cards and charging people for them, which is not in line with its regulations. The commission urged Nigerians to avoid such services and rely solely on the official NIN slip until the GMPC is formally introduced.

Security Measures and Legal Compliance

NIMC has taken steps to ensure compliance by engaging security agencies to monitor and take action where necessary. The commission reiterated that anyone presenting a printed NIN card as an official identity document will not be recognized.

“The public is advised to stop printing NIN cards against the authorized NIMC GMPC. These printed cards are not officially recognized, and individuals should not use them for identification purposes,” the statement read.

The Upcoming General Multipurpose Card (GMPC)

The NIMC reaffirmed its commitment to launching the General Multipurpose Card (GMPC), which will provide both identity verification and financial transaction capabilities. The card is expected to:

  • Serve as a legal identification document
  • Enable secure financial transactions
  • Provide biometric-based security features
  • Be usable both online and offline

Key Features of the GMPC

The upcoming GMPC is designed to enhance security and efficiency. It will include:

  • Biometric authentication to prevent identity fraud
  • Compliance with financial regulations (KYC)
  • Offline and online usability for convenience
  • Extended validity for long-term use

How to Get the GMPC

The NIMC has confirmed that the GMPC will be available for a fee, but steps will be taken to ensure that less-privileged Nigerians can access it at a subsidized rate. Nigerians will be able to obtain the card at banks and designated centers nationwide.

Why the GMPC Will Not Be Free for Everyone

Dr. Peter Iwegbu, Head of Card Management Services at NIMC, explained that previous efforts to distribute free ID cards were unsuccessful, with over two million uncollected cards still in storage. To avoid a repeat of this situation, the government has introduced a cost-based approach, ensuring that only those who need the GMPC apply for it.

“We want to ensure that those who genuinely need the card can obtain it. However, provisions will be made for those who cannot afford it,” Dr. Iwegbu stated.

Final Reminder from NIMC

Until the GMPC is officially launched, Nigerians are advised to continue using the NIN slip, which remains the only recognized identity document issued by the NIMC. Any other printed version of the NIN card is not valid.
