NLC Denies President Tinubu’s Claim of N1 Trillion Savings After Fuel Subsidy Removal

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has openly refuted President Bola Tinubu’s recent claim that his government has saved a staggering N1 trillion since the cessation of fuel subsidy payments. In a nationwide broadcast on Monday, President Tinubu proudly announced the purported savings, attributing it to the government’s decision to halt fuel subsidy payments.

However, during the ongoing nationwide protest organized by the labour unions, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, along with Festus Osifo of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), led protesters to the national assembly complex on Wednesday and revealed a starkly different picture. According to Ajaero, the committee set up by the Federal Government to negotiate with Labour disclosed that not a single kobo had been saved as claimed by President Tinubu.

Ajaero emphasized that the negotiation committee stated unequivocally that there had been no actual savings as of yet. Consequently, no agreement has been reached regarding any potential payments.

This contradiction between President Tinubu’s claims and the committee’s report has only added fuel to the fire of the ongoing protest. The labour unions have been demanding transparency and accountability from the government, particularly in light of the removal of the fuel subsidy and its purported savings.

As the protests continue, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the NLC’s assertion and what actions will be taken to address the concerns raised by the labour unions.
