In a recent development, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has categorically denied any plans to increase the price of petrol to N1,200 per litre, refuting earlier reports that circulated on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. According to the NNPC, the misinformation originated from a misunderstanding regarding the alleged subsidy reduction. The corporation clarified that it had not clashed with any party and termed the headlines, particularly one from The Punch, as “unfortunate.”
In addressing the matter, Soneye stated, “NNPC Ltd emphasises it has not clashed with any party. The Punch headline is deemed unfortunate. The publication sought confirmation on the alleged subsidy reduction, to which NNPC responded that the subsidy has been entirely removed.”

This clarification puts to rest the speculations surrounding a potential surge in petrol prices, providing assurance to the public about the stability of fuel costs. The NNPC’s denial aligns with its commitment to transparency and keeping the public informed about any significant changes in the oil and gas sector.
As of now, the NNPC remains resolute in its stance that there is no ongoing plan to increase the price of petrol. This development comes at a crucial time when fuel prices worldwide are subject to fluctuations due to various geopolitical and economic factors.
It is noteworthy that the NNPC’s communication on this matter not only refutes the alleged petrol price increment but also addresses the removal of subsidies, shedding light on the corporation’s strategic decisions and financial considerations.
In conclusion, while earlier reports may have caused concern and uncertainty among consumers, the NNPC’s prompt clarification serves as a testament to its commitment to open communication and dispelling misinformation. As Nigerians await further updates on the nation’s fuel pricing policies, the NNPC’s latest statement reassures the public that, at least for now, there are no plans to increase the price of petrol to N1,200 per litre.
