NNPP Blames Kwankwaso for Kano Governor’s Removal by Tribunal

NNPP Blames Kwankwaso for Kano Governor's Removal by Tribunal

In a surprising turn of events, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has pointed fingers at former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso for what they deem as the downfall of Kano Governor Yusuf Abba following the State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal’s ruling.

NNPP claims that Kwankwaso, in pursuit of a ministerial position in President Bola Tinubu’s government, allegedly betrayed the party by aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The consequences of this political maneuver became evident when the tribunal invalidated Abba’s victory and declared Nasir Gawuna, the APC candidate, as the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election.

Led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan-Osadebay, the three-man tribunal panel based its decision on the assertion that the margin of votes attributed to NNPP was not compliant with the 2022 electoral act. Specifically, they deducted 165,663 votes from NNPP’s tally, declaring them invalid due to the lack of proper stamping or signing on the corresponding ballot papers.

Reacting to these developments, Alhaji Abass Akande Onilewura, a prominent NNPP figure in the Southwest, issued a statement to the press on Thursday. In his statement, he underscored that the party’s loss in Kano corroborated previous allegations of anti-party actions against Kwankwaso.

The tribunal’s verdict has ignited a fresh wave of political debate and speculation about the motivations behind Kwankwaso’s actions and the implications for NNPP in the larger political landscape.
