NNPP Breaks Its Silence on Kwankwaso’s Suspension Controversy

NNPP Breaks Its Silence on Kwankwaso's Suspension Controversy

In a recent turn of events, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has stepped forward to address the growing controversy surrounding the alleged suspension of Rabiu Kwankwaso, the party’s 2023 Presidential Candidate. The NNPP’s National Working Committee (NWC) convened a press conference at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja to shed light on the matter.

Ladipo Johnson, the NNPP’s national auditor and former spokesperson for the Kwankwanso Presidential Campaign Council, took the lead in clarifying the party’s stance. Johnson unequivocally stated that the reported suspension of Kwankwaso is null and void, citing several key points to support the party’s position.

The suspension, which was claimed to have been carried out by a faction led by former Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman Boniface Aniebonan, purportedly stemmed from allegations of anti-party activities after a parallel National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Lagos. This faction suspended Kwankwaso for a period of six months and appointed Major Agbo, a former National Publicity Secretary of the party, as the acting National Chairman.

However, the NNPP’s NWC, headed by Johnson, refuted this suspension. He highlighted that the individuals who announced Kwankwaso’s suspension had themselves faced disciplinary actions within the party. These members were initially suspended for three months due to engaging in unwholesome acts, and later they were expelled. Johnson raised questions about the legitimacy of their actions and decisions, pointing out the irony that those who were suspended and expelled from the party claimed to have suspended Kwankwaso.

In the press conference, Johnson also questioned the credibility of the parallel NEC meeting and its decisions. He sought to clarify whether the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was present at the meeting, emphasizing the importance of transparency and proper procedures in party affairs.

Furthermore, Johnson addressed the alleged anti-party activities associated with Kwankwaso. He disclosed that Kwankwaso had been invited to meetings by President Bola Tinubu to discuss various issues. However, he emphasized that attending these meetings did not equate to anti-party activities, as Kwankwaso always obtained permission before attending and no detrimental conclusions were reached as a result.

Oluwatosin Odeyemi, the chairman of the forum of NNPP state chairmen, also weighed in on the situation. He characterized the alleged suspension of Kwankwaso as an outcome of political bitterness and personal grievances, urging the party to prioritize unity and adherence to established procedures.

In summary, the NNPP’s NWC has made it clear that Rabiu Kwankwaso’s reported suspension is without merit and lacks proper procedure. The party intends to maintain its unity and work towards reconciliation within its ranks. This unfolding story highlights the intricacies of party politics and the challenges that can arise during times of transition and power struggles.
