No PVC, No Voting on Election Day – INEC Warns Nigerians

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given a strong warning to Nigerians without Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to stay away from the polling units on election day. This announcement was made by Festus Okoye, the INEC National Commissioner, during the reception of IT facilities from Community Life Project (CLP) and Ford Foundation in support of the INEC Citizens Contact Centre (ICCC) in Abuja.

According to Okoye, no other means of identification will be accepted on election day except the PVC. This means that Nigerians who have not registered and obtained their PVCs will not be allowed to vote on election day. This is in line with the provisions of Section 47 Subsection 1 of the Electoral Act which mandates that every citizen who wishes to vote must have a PVC.

INEC’s warning is important as it underscores the need for all eligible voters to take their voter registration and PVC collection seriously. It is the only way to ensure that they are able to exercise their franchise on election day. Without a PVC, a voter cannot vote and this will deprive them of their right to choose their leaders.

It is therefore crucial that all eligible Nigerians who have not registered or collected their PVCs should do so immediately as the deadline for voter registration and PVC collection will be announced ahead of the election. The process of registering and obtaining a PVC is relatively easy and straightforward. Eligible voters only need to visit the nearest INEC office in their local government area, provide their personal details and biometrics, and collect their PVCs once they are ready.

INEC’s warning also highlights the commission’s commitment to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria. It is important that all stakeholders, including political parties and civil society organizations, join INEC in achieving this goal by encouraging eligible voters to register and collect their PVCs and also by abiding by the rules and regulations of the electoral process.

INEC’s warning to Nigerians without PVCs to stay away from the polling units on election day is a timely reminder of the importance of voter registration and PVC collection in the electoral process. Eligible voters who have not yet registered or collected their PVCs are urged to do so without delay in order to participate in the upcoming elections.
