The National Population Commission (NPC) has recently announced its commitment to ensuring the utmost confidentiality of personal information gathered during the upcoming 2023 population and housing census. Amidst preparations for this crucial exercise, the NPC assures households that all data collected by enumerators will be treated as strictly confidential.
In a meeting with media executives in Katsina State, the Federal Commissioner representing Katsina State, Mr Bala Almu-Banye, emphasized the significance of this census and outlined the steps taken to guarantee a successful and confidential data collection process. Adequate ad hoc staff have been recruited to ensure comprehensive coverage across every nook and cranny of the state. These staff members will work within their local governments of residence to achieve the set targets efficiently.
The NPC is leaving no stone unturned when it comes to data security. Enumerators and supervisors involved in the census will take a solemn oath to uphold confidentiality and protect the privacy of citizens. This means that all personal information gathered during the census will be solely used for the purpose of the exercise and not disclosed to any third parties.
To facilitate data transmission, the NPC will employ the use of cutting-edge technology. The information collected by enumerators will be digitally transmitted directly to the commission’s secure server through Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), similar to mobile phones. This advanced process ensures quick and secure data storage without compromising individual privacy.

Recognizing the challenges of reaching remote areas, the NPC will collaborate with traditional and community leaders to ensure that every citizen is counted. In response to the NPC’s commitment to data privacy and accuracy, media executives, represented by Alhaji Bashir Ahmed, the General Manager of Gram FM, have pledged their support. The media will actively engage in enlightening the public about the significance of the census and the importance of participating in the exercise.
With the NPC’s latest assurance on data confidentiality, citizens can now confidently participate in the 2023 Census, knowing that their personal information is safe and secure.
