“For us at OPay, giving back to society, especially through education, is at the heart of what we do,” Gotring said.
The scholarship forms part of OPay’s broader initiative to support 400 students annually across Nigerian universities, including the University of Ibadan and Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Over the next decade, the company plans to invest ₦120 million each year to help students thrive academically and professionally.
In addition to the scholarship program, Gotring hinted at further plans to empower women in Zaria through entrepreneurship programs, startup support, and skills training. These initiatives aim to create sustainable opportunities, foster financial independence, and strengthen local economies.
“By focusing on both education and economic empowerment, OPay is dedicated to creating a ripple effect of positive change that strengthens communities and local economies,” he added.
ABU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, expressed gratitude to OPay for the scholarships, emphasizing the relief it brings to students and their families. He noted that such support would enable students to focus on achieving their academic and personal goals.
“This support from OPay will lift a heavy burden off our students, helping them focus on their dreams and academic goals. We are incredibly grateful to OPay for their generosity and partnership,” Prof. Bala said.
The initiative highlights OPay’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and its role in addressing key challenges facing Nigerian students and communities. By investing in education and economic empowerment, the company is setting a benchmark for sustainable development and community impact.
