Osimhen Fires Back at Finidi Over Claims of Non-Commitment to Super Eagles

Victor Osimhen, the prolific striker for Napoli and a key player for Nigeria’s national football team, has strongly rebutted recent comments made by former Super Eagles head coach George Finidi. The remarks in question suggested doubts about Osimhen’s commitment to the national squad following Nigeria’s lackluster performances in recent World Cup qualifiers.

Osimhen, who missed Nigeria’s crucial matches against South Africa and Benin Republic due to injury concerns, expressed his disappointment during a candid Instagram Live session. He vehemently defended his dedication to the Super Eagles, emphasizing that he had informed Finidi about his injury well in advance of the games.

“Everyone knows I give my all, whether it’s for my club or my country. I won’t allow anyone to disrespect me or tarnish my name,” Osimhen stated emphatically. He further indicated his readiness to provide evidence of his conversation with Finidi to dispel any doubts about his commitment.

The 25-year-old striker also expressed disillusionment with Finidi, revealing that the former coach had advised him against joining the national team camp, suggesting he stay with his family instead.

“I’ve lost respect for that man now,” Osimhen asserted, reflecting the disappointment caused by Finidi’s remarks.

Known for his resilience and determination, Osimhen highlighted his history of playing through injuries for the Super Eagles and questioned the scapegoating of his absence for Nigeria’s recent poor performances.

Meanwhile, in a surprising turn of events, George Finidi recently resigned from his role as the Super Eagles coach, less than two months after officially taking over the position. His resignation followed criticism following Nigeria’s defeat to Benin Republic and a draw with South Africa, which left their World Cup qualification hopes in jeopardy.

Finidi, a member of Nigeria’s historic 1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team and a veteran of the nation’s maiden World Cup appearance the same year, had faced mounting pressure after the disappointing results. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has announced plans to appoint a foreign technical adviser for the Super Eagles amid ongoing challenges in their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Nigeria currently sits fifth in Group C standings, trailing leaders Rwanda by a significant margin. Their next competitive fixture will be in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers later this year.
