French football star Paul Pogba has been handed a four-year ban from football by Italy’s anti-doping tribunal after testing positive for testosterone in August. Juventus, his club, confirmed receiving notification of the ban. Pogba, a World Cup winner, was provisionally suspended in September. He plans to appeal the ruling, expressing shock and denial on Instagram. Pogba claims innocence, asserting that he never knowingly took substances violating anti-doping regulations. The ban means he won’t be able to play until the 2027/28 season, making him 34 by then.

The anti-doping prosecutors had called for a four-year ban, following Pogba’s positive test during Juventus’s Serie A match against Udinese. His representatives attribute the testosterone presence to a prescribed food supplement from a US doctor. The ban could have been reduced if Pogba could prove his innocence or if the substance use was unrelated to performance. Pogba had returned to Juventus in 2022 after six years at Manchester United, struggling with fitness in his first season back.

Off-field issues add complexity to Pogba’s situation, including an extortion attempt in March 2022, involving a break-in at his Paris home. Investigation implicates his older brother and childhood friends. Despite a contract until 2026, Juventus suspended Pogba’s salary since the positive test announcement. Pogba, a key player in France’s 2018 World Cup win, has faced challenges since rejoining Juventus, including injuries and missing the recent World Cup.

The footballer, known for his time at Juventus and Manchester United, won several titles during his first stint at Juve. His return to Manchester United in 2016 set a world record fee. Pogba has represented France in numerous international competitions, earning 91 caps and contributing to their Euro 2016 final and 2018 World Cup triumph.
