In a significant development, Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has firmly rejected the judgment delivered by the Presidential Election Petitions Court regarding the hotly contested February 25, 2023, presidential election in Nigeria. Mr. Obi, speaking in Onitsha, openly acknowledged the Tribunal’s adherence to statutory timelines but voiced profound concerns regarding the judgment’s rationale and ultimate conclusions.
In his capacity as a presidential candidate and representing the Labour Party, Peter Obi declared his intention to challenge the verdict through the established appellate process, as prescribed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Despite the Tribunal’s decision, he stressed that the ultimate authority in this matter lies with the Supreme Court, an institution in which he places his trust.
Encouraging Nigerians to uphold their commitment to peaceful processes and the rule of law, Obi emphasized that the case remains far from a final resolution. He revealed that his legal team had received clear instructions to file an appeal against the Tribunal’s decision and expressed unwavering determination to seek justice not only for himself but also for the multitude of supporters whose electoral mandate he believes was unjustly thwarted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Obi underscored the critical role of strong national institutions and the public’s confidence in them for a thriving democracy. He highlighted that transparent and fair discharge of statutory functions by bodies like INEC could significantly reduce electoral litigations. However, when such institutions falter, as he argued INEC did in this case, the judiciary becomes an imperative recourse.

Peter Obi extended his gratitude to all Nigerians who supported his campaign for a “New Nigeria” founded on principles of fairness, equity, justice, the rule of law, peace, prosperity, inclusiveness, sustainable growth, and development. He expressed his appreciation for his legal team, the Labour Party, the “Obidient Family,” and all those who unwaveringly attended the court proceedings.
