The Rising Cost of Fuel

Before the latest hike, petrol prices in Benue had already been elevated, ranging between N850 and N950 per litre at filling stations run by independent marketers. Black market operators were known to sell at N1,000 per litre. However, the recent adjustment has pushed prices further, with most stations in Makurdi and other major towns now dispensing petrol at N980 to N1,100 per litre.

The NNPC Mega station, which is one of the few stations selling at the official rate of N617 per litre, is often out of stock, forcing residents to purchase from independent marketers at much higher prices.

Public Outrage and Hardship

The sudden price hike has sparked widespread anger among residents, who are finding it increasingly difficult to manage the rising costs. Christopher, a commercial motorcycle operator, expressed his frustration, noting that the continuous increase in petrol prices is making life unbearable. “We did not see this coming. This government wants to impoverish Nigerians the more,” he lamented, highlighting the toll that the rising cost of fuel is taking on his ability to provide for his family.

Similarly, Comrade Odeka, a commercial bus driver, voiced his discontent, stating that the government’s policies are punishing Nigerians. He noted that just a few days ago, he purchased fuel for N850 per litre, only to find the price had risen to N980 per litre. “This is not what they promised us during the election,” he said, reflecting the deep sense of betrayal felt by many who had hoped for better conditions under the current administration.

Economic Impact and Future Concerns

The increase in fuel prices is not only affecting transportation costs but is also expected to have a ripple effect on the prices of goods and services across the state. As residents struggle to afford basic necessities, there is growing concern that the situation could lead to even greater economic hardship.

The rising cost of petrol, coupled with the government’s perceived insensitivity to the plight of ordinary Nigerians, has led to widespread dissatisfaction. Many are questioning the government’s ability to manage the economy and provide relief to the masses.

As the situation in Benue State continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the mounting pressure from citizens who are demanding immediate action to alleviate their suffering.
