In a heartwarming initiative, the Kebbi State Government, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Nasir Idris, recently orchestrated a mass wedding ceremony for more than 300 widows, divorcees, and indigents at the Gwandu Emirate Palace in Birnin Kebbi. The event, held on Sunday, was organized by the NANAS foundation, a pet project of Hajia Nafisa Nasir Idris, the wife of Governor Idris.

Hajia Nasir Idris explained that the primary aim of the mass wedding was to alleviate the challenges faced by those who had experienced divorces, lost spouses, or were economically disadvantaged and unable to afford the expenses associated with marriage. The initiative, supported by the Kebbi State Government, provided essential items such as beds, chairs, and kitchen utensils to ensure a stable start for the newlyweds.

Governor Idris’s wife emphasized the government’s responsibility to assist citizens, stating, “It is the responsibility of the government to assist the citizenry in the best way it can.” She highlighted that the mass weddings aimed to instill a sense of belonging and support for divorces, widows, and the economically disadvantaged, echoing Governor Idris’s commitment to returning governance to the people.

During the ceremony, a total of 21 million naira was disbursed as dowry to the brides’ parents. Each bride received seventy thousand naira as dowry, in addition to a set of chairs, beds, kitchen utensils, and food items. This not only eased the financial burden of marriage but also provided essential resources for the couples to begin their new lives together.

The mass wedding garnered significant attention and was attended by prominent figures, including Sheik Aminu Daurawa, a renowned Islamic cleric from Kano State, local government chairmen, top political figures in Kebbi, and Hisbah officials who played a crucial role in organizing the event. Beneficiaries were drawn from all 21 local governments, showcasing the widespread impact of this welfare-oriented initiative.

The Kebbi State Government’s commitment to social welfare and community development was evident in this commendable effort. The mass weddings reflect positively on Governor Dr. Nasir Idris’s governance approach, demonstrating a dedication to improving the lives of citizens.
