Plateau Attacks: Death Toll Surges to 155, Confirms Local Government Chairman

In a devastating turn of events, the death toll from the recent attacks on Plateau communities has risen to 155, according to the Chairman of Bokkos local government, Hon Monday Kassa. Speaking to The Nation, Kassa revealed that the situation remains dire, with people still searching for missing loved ones in the bush.

“Today we have recovered more than 20 bodies from the bushes, and the search is not over yet,” Kassa stated. “The situation on the ground now is not yet Uhuru. We are working tirelessly. Now, as we are talking, the leadership of the Fulani are saying that they are going to talk to their people, and so we want to take them by their words; we don’t have problems.”

Kassa emphasized that the affected communities have not initiated any attacks but have been subjected to relentless aggression. “They are the ones attacking and attacking, and we don’t really understand why they are attacking us,” he added.

Providing an update on the casualties, Kassa reported a death toll of 125 in Bokkos local government. Additionally, the Chairman of Barkin Ladi local government, Hon Danjuma Dakil, revised the death toll in his region to 30, contradicting earlier reports of 17 casualties. Dakil also disclosed that over 1000 individuals sustained injuries, overwhelming the Jos University Teaching Hospital (Juth). As a result, the injured were distributed to various hospitals in Jos city.

“I’m pleased that the state governor has assured of footing the medical bills of the injured,” Dakil stated. He further confirmed that the state governor has sought assistance from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), with NEMA assuring a prompt response to the emergencies.

“As I speak to you, NEMA is on its way to Bokkos, and after that, they will come to Barkin Ladi,” Dakil affirmed.

The gravity of the situation has prompted government intervention, with the assurance of medical support for the injured and emergency response teams mobilizing to the affected areas.
