A former member of the Zuru Local government Area vigilante group, Abubakar Bello, was shot and killed by a police officer during Saturday’s supplementary elections in Kebbi State. Bello had attempted to snatch a ballot box in polling unit 001, Bajida, in Zuru local government area when he was caught by the officer. However, he refused to hand over the ballot box and made an attempt to grab the officer’s rifle, leading to his fatal shooting.
The incident occurred as Bello became desperate to undermine the election process after realizing his preferred candidate was losing. The police authorities have not made a formal statement regarding the incident at the time of writing.
The use of violence and intimidation during elections is a threat to democracy and the rule of law. The Nigerian government must ensure that all security agencies deployed to maintain law and order during elections act with utmost professionalism and adherence to the law. Electoral violence must be condemned and punished to prevent a repeat of such incidents in future elections.
