Kannywood actress Amal Umar has been brought before Magistrate Court No. 24 in Gyadi-Gyadi area of Kano metropolis on charges of allegedly attempting to bribe a law enforcement officer.
The accusation against her involves an alleged attempt to bribe ASP Salisu Bujama, a Police officer from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Zone 1 headquarters in Kano State, with a sum of N250,000. This bribe was purportedly aimed at stopping the Police investigation into alleged financial misappropriation by her boyfriend, Ramadan Inuwa.

The series of events began with a complaint filed by Alhaji Yusuf Adamu, represented by his lawyer H.I. Dederi, to Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Umar Mohd Sanda on August 18, 2022. The complaint outlined allegations of financial misappropriation amounting to N40 million by Ramadan Inuwa in his cell phone business. Subsequent police investigations revealed that N13 million had been transferred to Amal Umar’s bank account by Inuwa.

The Nigerian Police Force spokesperson for Zone 1, Kano, CSP Bashir Muhammed, stated that Amal Umar was summoned for questioning, granted bail, but prevented from leaving in a car allegedly purchased by her boyfriend. Umar confessed that the money in her account belonged to her boyfriend, claiming that only N8 million had been transferred.
Following her bail, Amal Umar sought legal intervention by approaching the High Court of Kano State to halt further police investigations. The court temporarily restrained the police from pursuing the case against her. However, during this time, Amal allegedly attempted to bribe Police investigator ASP Salisu Bujama.
The Police thwarted this attempt and subsequently arrested Amal Umar with evidence of the alleged bribery. She was then arraigned before the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. The alleged offence contravenes Section 118 of the Penal Code, which prohibits the bribery of a police officer.
