In a recent statement, the Presidency refuted ongoing rumors suggesting that President Bola Tinubu has plans to relocate the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to Lagos. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, dismissed these speculations, labeling them as politically motivated and devoid of truth.
The rumors initially surfaced during last year’s campaign, with opponents attempting to utilize various tactics to thwart President Tinubu’s political ambitions. Onanuga asserted that these rumors were swiftly debunked during the campaign period, and the recent resurgence of such speculations is seen as an attempt by certain quarters to sow discord.

Accusing those behind the rumors of being “dishonest, ethnic, and regional champions,” Onanuga argued that their intentions were to create divisions and draw attention to themselves. He emphasized that Abuja’s status as the Federal Capital Territory is firmly grounded in law and is not subject to change.
The recent administrative decision to relocate the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to Lagos was clarified by Onanuga. He stressed that this move should not be misconstrued as a larger plan to shift the entire Federal Capital, citing strategic reasons related to Lagos being the commercial capital and aviation hub of Nigeria.
Similarly, Onanuga addressed the relocation of some departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to Lagos. He explained that such decisions were made to align with the locations of the institutions they regulate, highlighting the need to avoid politicizing routine administrative adjustments.

The statement urged for a depoliticization of administrative decisions, pointing out that various parastatals are not headquartered in Abuja based on their mandates. Examples such as the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in Lagos and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) in Lokoja were cited to illustrate this point.
In conclusion, the Presidency called for an end to what they termed as “dirty politics” and urged against using administrative decisions to create unnecessary controversies. Onanuga emphasized the importance of focusing on the broader governmental agenda and avoiding unfounded rumors that could potentially harm the unity of the nation.
