In a significant move to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal policy and address the growing concerns of Nigerians, President Bola Tinubu announced a generous wage increase for low-grade workers in the civil service during his Independence Day Broadcast. The wage increment, which will last for six months, is part of a broader strategy to alleviate the financial burden on citizens during these challenging times.
President Tinubu acknowledged the hardships faced by Nigerians and expressed his commitment to finding solutions. He emphasized his administration’s dedication to building a strong and stable foundation for the nation’s future, even if it meant enduring some painful reforms.
The President stated, “Reform may be painful, but it is what greatness and the future require. We now carry the costs of reaching a future Nigeria where the abundance and fruits of the nation are fairly shared among all, not hoarded by a select and greedy few.”

Highlighting the measures his government is taking to ease the burden on families and households, President Tinubu outlined key initiatives:
- Public Sector Reforms: The government has initiated public sector reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy, directing fiscal and monetary policies to combat inflation, promoting production, ensuring security, and providing more support to the poor and vulnerable.
- Provisional Wage Increment: In consultation with labor unions, businesses, and stakeholders, a provisional wage increment has been introduced to enhance the federal minimum wage. Low-grade workers will receive an additional N25,000 per month for the next six months.
- Infrastructure Support Fund: An Infrastructure Support Fund has been established for states to invest in critical areas. States have already received funds to provide relief packages in response to rising food and commodity prices.
- Affordable Transportation: The government is taking steps to lower transportation costs by deploying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses across the nation. These buses will operate at a fraction of current fuel prices, resulting in reduced transport fares for citizens.
President Tinubu further revealed plans to expedite the procurement of new CNG conversion kits and establish training facilities and workshops nationwide to train and empower transport operators and entrepreneurs, thereby creating new economic opportunities.
This groundbreaking shift towards more efficient and cost-effective means of powering the economy marks a significant turning point for the nation. President Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring that Nigerians have access to a brighter future and a fairer distribution of resources demonstrates his determination to address the challenges facing the nation head-on.
