In a significant development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken a decisive step towards combating corruption by appointing a special investigator to probe the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and related entities. The move comes in the aftermath of the suspension and subsequent arrest of Godwin Emefiele, the former CBN governor, by the Department of State Security on June 9, 2023.
According to a letter seen by DAILY POST, President Tinubu has named Jim Osayande Obazee as the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), who will serve as the investigator. The appointment was made in adherence to the fundamental objective outlined in Section 15(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), which emphasizes the government’s commitment to fighting corruption.
The president’s decision to appoint a special investigator highlights the seriousness with which the administration is approaching the issue of corruption and its commitment to upholding transparency and accountability in government affairs. The investigation is expected to encompass the CBN and other key government business entities.
In recent weeks, the CBN has been under scrutiny, and the suspension of its governor, Godwin Emefiele, raised several questions. Despite a Federal High Court in Lagos granting Emefiele bail, he was re-arrested by the Department of State Security last week, adding further intrigue to the situation.
As per the president’s directive, the appointed special investigator, Jim Osayande Obazee, will commence the probing process immediately and will report directly to President Tinubu’s office. The objective is to ensure a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the workings of the CBN and related entities, thereby ensuring that any irregularities or corrupt practices are exposed and addressed.
President Tinubu’s initiative has garnered attention from citizens and stakeholders alike, as the fight against corruption continues to be a top priority for the administration. The move is expected to send a strong message that no individual or entity is above the law, and any wrongdoing within government institutions will be thoroughly investigated and dealt with accordingly.
As the investigation unfolds, Nigerians eagerly await the findings and hope that justice will prevail in the interest of the nation’s progress and development. The government’s commitment to transparency and accountability remains paramount, and this latest move is seen as a pivotal step towards achieving these goals.
