President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) in honor of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. This decision, announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, follows a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The institution will now be called The Yakubu Gowon University, pending approval by the National Assembly.
The renaming is a tribute to General Gowon’s significant role in Nigeria’s history, particularly during his tenure as Head of State from 1966 to 1975. Known for his leadership during the post-civil war period, Gowon championed policies of reconciliation, reconstruction, and rehabilitation, which helped restore stability and unity in Nigeria.
