President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during a visit to Maiduguri, Borno State, on September 16, 2024, announced the establishment of a disaster relief fund to support communities affected by floods and other natural disasters. The fund aims to provide timely assistance in response to the growing challenges posed by climate change, particularly in vulnerable regions of Nigeria.
President Tinubu’s visit included meetings with the Shehu of Borno and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) at the Government Secondary School in Maiduguri. He also toured flood-affected areas to assess the damage firsthand. Reflecting on the experience, Tinubu emphasized the importance of a national disaster relief fund, which would be bolstered through partnerships with the private sector and contributions from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

“There must be a disaster relief fund,” Tinubu declared. “We will invite the private sector to team up with us and rebuild the affected areas. If we allocate a small percentage from FAAC, we can activate and strengthen our sense of belonging.”
The president extended his sympathy to the people of Yobe State and other flood-affected areas, assuring them of continued government support. He further lauded Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno for his proactive efforts in disaster response and thanked the military’s Theatre Command for their life-saving evacuations.
The Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba El-Kanemi, expressed gratitude for the president’s visit and urged for an investigation into the collapse of the Alua dam, which contributed to the flooding.
The visit underscores the federal government’s commitment to disaster preparedness and recovery efforts in the face of increasingly unpredictable climate conditions. President Tinubu assured Nigerians that the government would work diligently to mitigate the impacts of future natural disasters, promoting unity and cooperation across all regions.
