Michael Anugwa, the deputy controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), has refuted claims that he was suspended in connection with allegations of bribery involving Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky. Anugwa is the officer in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kirikiri, Lagos, where Bobrisky recently served time.
Addressing members of the house of representatives joint committee on financial crimes and reformatory institutions on Monday, Anugwa clarified that reports of his suspension circulating on social media were false. He stated that he was never officially served a suspension letter.
“The claim that I was suspended is a social media report. I wasn’t served a letter,” he told the committee.
The investigation comes as the committee probes allegations of bribery and corruption involving both the NCoS and Nigeria’s anti-graft agency. Last week, Ja’afaru Ahmed, the secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), had announced that Anugwa, along with Sikiru Adekunle, another deputy controller of corrections at the MSCC, had been suspended pending an investigation. However, Anugwa insists he remains in active service.
This investigation continues to gather public attention, given Bobrisky’s high-profile status and the allegations of misconduct against public officials.
