Sultan of Sokoto Announces Date to Sight for 1445 Ramadan

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has officially revealed the tentative dates for the annual Ramadan fast in 2024. According to a statement signed by the Deputy Secretary-General, Prof Salisu Shehu, the Council has set March 11 and March 12, 2024, as the possible commencement dates, pending the sighting of the moon after sunset on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

The NSCIA’s Call to Action

In the communiqué, the NSCIA earnestly calls upon the Muslim Ummah to actively participate in the search for the crescent of Ramadan 1445 on the designated date, which aligns with the 29th Sha’aban 1445 AH. Emphasizing the importance of community involvement, the NSCIA urges those with credible sightings of the crescent to promptly inform the National Moon Sighting Committee.

Ramadan 1445: A Spiritual Endeavor

Expressing warm felicitations to the entire Muslim Ummah, the NSCIA, led by the President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, invokes prayers for Allah to spare the lives of every Muslim, enabling their participation in the upcoming ibadah (worship) exercise during Ramadan. The council encourages the faithful to maximize the spiritual benefits inherent in this holy month.

Critical Moon Sighting Guidelines

Following the advice of the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), the President-General advises the Nigerian Muslim Ummah to commence their search for the crescent of Ramadan 1445 AH immediately after sunset on Sunday, 10th March 2024. This date, equivalent to the 29th Sha’aban 1445 AH, marks a crucial period for determining the official start of Ramadan.

Should the crescent be sighted on this evening by Muslims of impeccable character, His Eminence Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar would declare Monday, 11th March 2024, as the first day of Ramadan 1445 AH. Conversely, if the crescent remains elusive on that day, Tuesday, 12th March 2024, automatically becomes the official commencement of Ramadan, 1445 AH.

Addressing Economic Hardships: A Plea for Generosity

Acknowledging the prevalent economic challenges in the country, Prof Salisu Shehu appeals to the “endowed Muslims” to extend acts of charity to the less privileged within their neighborhoods. This call for generosity echoes the spirit of Ramadan, urging individuals to practice compassion before, during, and after the month.

Responsible Commerce During Ramadan

In light of economic hardships, the NSCIA admonishes traders against hoarding food products and unduly hiking prices during the fasting period. This stern advisory aims to ensure fair and reasonable access to essential goods, fostering a sense of community responsibility among businesses.

A Prayer for the Oppressed: Focusing on Palestine

Amidst the call for spiritual reflection during Ramadan, the NSCIA encourages Muslims to utilize this sacred month to fervently pray for divine support and liberation for the Palestinians facing oppression. This message extends beyond national boundaries, reinforcing the Council’s commitment to global Islamic solidarity.

Embracing Ramadan 1445: A Call to Action

As the Muslim Ummah eagerly awaits the commencement of Ramadan 1445, the NSCIA’s directives provide a roadmap for spiritual engagement and community responsibility. The call to actively participate in moon sighting, extend charity to the less privileged, and maintain ethical commerce aligns with the core principles of Islam.

In conclusion, as Muslims embark on this spiritual journey, let us heed the NSCIA’s guidance and embody the true essence of Ramadan – a time for reflection, compassion, and unity.
