Port Harcourt, October 10, 2024
The Rivers Elders and Leadership Forum has publicly declared its unwavering support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, praising his resolve amidst growing political unrest in the state. At a press conference in Port Harcourt, Rufus Ada-George, chairperson of the forum and former governor of Rivers, lauded Fubara’s determination to safeguard the interests of Rivers residents, despite increasing provocation from certain political figures.
“We commend Governor Fubara for his courage and determination in standing firm and resolute in defending the interests of the people of Rivers state,” said Mr Ada-George. He emphasized the governor’s commitment to democracy, crediting Fubara and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission for upholding democratic values during the recent local government elections.
While the forum expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his efforts to de-escalate tensions in the state, Mr Ada-George criticized the president for not addressing the role of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in the ongoing crisis. Ada-George stated that Tinubu’s failure to publicly reprimand Wike sends a troubling message.
“President Tinubu has called for peace and urged aggrieved parties to seek justice through the courts. However, by not addressing Wike’s involvement in the crisis, it sends the wrong signal,” Ada-George remarked.
He reiterated that the political battle for influence in Rivers State has concluded, with the electorate making their choices clear during the elections. He urged dissenting politicians to respect the will of the people and avoid further unrest.
“The people of Rivers have now restructured, and any resort to violence or arson will not benefit us,” he warned. Ada-George also called on the police to act swiftly in maintaining order, protecting public property, and enforcing President Tinubu’s directive to secure local government offices.
Additionally, Gabriel Toby, former deputy governor of Rivers, expressed confidence in the ability of the police to maintain peace despite concerns about partisanship before the elections. He affirmed the forum’s belief in the capacity of law enforcement to act impartially and uphold their duties.
