Rivers Police to Follow Court Order and Stay Out of October 5 Local Elections

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed its decision to fully comply with the Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, which prohibits the police from participating in the local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024. This development comes shortly after a protest led by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains, including Rivers State party chairman Aaron Chukwuemeka, demanding adherence to the court order.

The protesters, along with their supporters, marched to the Department of State Services (DSS) and the State Police Command in Port Harcourt, urging both agencies to respect the court’s ruling and refrain from involvement in the election. During the protest, a petition and a copy of the court judgment were submitted to the officials of both institutions.

In response, the Rivers State Police Command issued a statement on Thursday, October 4, 2024, affirming its commitment to uphold the law. The statement, signed by the command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko, emphasized that while the police will not participate in the election, they will remain vigilant to prevent any potential security breaches.

Iringe-Koko explained that the command’s decision is based on the directive from the Force Legal Department, which stated that the Federal High Court ruling from September 30, 2024, supersedes all other considerations. This ruling reiterated an earlier court order issued on July 19, 2024, barring the police and other security agencies from providing security during the election.

The police called on all political parties and stakeholders to seek legal recourse if they feel aggrieved by any aspect of the electoral process. The command also urged citizens to remain peaceful and orderly during this period, assuring them that law enforcement will continue to maintain order and uphold the court’s directives.

Additionally, the police have directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to ensure full compliance with the court’s ruling. Other security agencies are also advised to adhere to the Federal High Court’s judgment.

In conclusion, the Rivers State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order while upholding the rule of law. Citizens were encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement during the election period to ensure peace and stability.
