Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been banned for seven matches and fined £100,000 by The Football Association (FA) after breaching FA Rule E3. The incident relates to a media interview in which the Uruguayan was found to have used improper and abusive language, allegedly referencing nationality or ethnic origin, which constitutes an aggravated breach under FA Rule E3.2.
The FA’s statement detailed the charges, explaining that Bentancur’s actions brought the game into disrepute. His suspension will begin on Saturday, November 23, when Spurs face Manchester City. He will miss six Premier League matches and an EFL Cup quarter-final against Manchester United on December 19, returning to domestic action on Boxing Day against Nottingham Forest.
