Saudi Arabia Confirms Ramadan to Begin on March 1 After Crescent Moon Sighting

Saudi Arabia has officially declared that the holy month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025, following the sighting of the crescent moon.

With this confirmation, over 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide will commence fasting from sunrise to sunset, observing one of the five pillars of Islam.

What You Should Know About Ramadan 2025

  • Lunar Calendar Significance: Ramadan falls on the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, which is shorter than the Gregorian calendar, consisting of 354 or 355 days in a year.
  • Fasting Obligation: Every healthy Muslim is required to fast, except for children, the sick, travelers, and women who are pregnant, nursing, or menstruating.
  • Islamic Tradition: Muslims have been observing the tradition of moon sighting for centuries to determine the start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha.
  • Adjustments in Daily Life: Many countries, including Saudi Arabia, adjust working hours for government offices, businesses, and schools to accommodate fasting schedules.

Ramadan 2025: A Time for Worship and Reflection

Ramadan is not only about fasting but also a time for prayer, self-discipline, and charity. Muslims engage in increased acts of worship, including reading the Qur’an, performing nightly Taraweeh prayers, and giving to the less fortunate.

As the month progresses, anticipation builds for Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of fasting, which will be determined by another moon sighting.
