In response to the recent declaration by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) listing his associate, Tukur Mamu, and others as terror sponsors, popular Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi expressed his disagreement, stating that security agencies do not have the authority to label individuals as terror financiers. Gumi emphasized that such judgments should be left to the courts. Mamu is currently facing trial for allegedly aiding terrorists involved in the Abuja-Kaduna train attack.
Gumi criticized what he sees as a premature media trial, asserting that it is the court’s responsibility to determine guilt or innocence. He insisted that Mamu should be allowed a fair trial, and if found guilty, he should face appropriate consequences. Gumi also defended his association with Mamu, describing the situation as a misunderstanding between Mamu and a committee involved in victim assistance.

Gumi further characterized Mamu’s arrest as a test of faith, believing that Mamu would overcome it. He urged for transparency in legal proceedings, emphasizing the importance of evidence and due process. Gumi condemned unjust arrests and intimidation tactics, likening them to acts of terrorism perpetrated by actual terrorist groups. He reiterated the need for adherence to legal procedures and fair treatment of individuals accused of wrongdoing.
