The Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to work with telecom operators to lower the cost of data and other internet services for consumers across the country.
This resolution came after Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South) presented a motion titled “Urgent Need to Address the Rising Cost of Data Services in Nigeria” during Wednesday’s plenary session. Lawmakers widely supported the motion, emphasizing the impact of high data costs on millions of Nigerians.
On February 11, major telecom companies, including MTN, Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile, increased data and airtime prices, citing higher operational expenses. The move, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission, has led to widespread concerns about affordability.
Senator Ekpenyong criticized the over 200% price hike, noting that it has placed a heavy financial strain on Nigerians, particularly young people who depend on internet access for their livelihoods. He stressed that many youths engage in online businesses such as e-commerce, software development, web design, content creation, and cryptocurrency trading, all of which rely on affordable internet services.

To address these concerns, the Senate recommended that the ministry develop a policy framework to make internet access more affordable. Additionally, lawmakers called for government support in establishing tech hubs across the country, offering free or subsidized internet to students, entrepreneurs, and digital innovators.
The motion also highlighted the challenges faced by businesses, including high diesel costs and bureaucratic obstacles that drive up operational expenses. Lawmakers argued that ensuring affordable internet would not only support Nigeria’s growing digital economy but also create opportunities for young entrepreneurs.
Following extensive deliberations, the Senate unanimously backed the motion, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio stating that affordable internet access would help small businesses thrive, increase revenue, and enhance economic growth.
