Senators Plan Impeachment of Senate President Godswill Akpabio Amidst Political Turmoil

As the Nigerian Senate prepares to reconvene on September 26, 2023, a storm is brewing within its hallowed chambers, with some aggrieved senators reportedly plotting the impeachment of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This daring move, born out of dissatisfaction with Akpabio’s perceived alignment with the presidency, could have far-reaching implications for the country’s political landscape.

Investigations by LEADERSHIP Weekend have uncovered that a group of influential senators, including two prominent figures from the North West, is secretly coordinating efforts to unseat the Senate President. Their primary grievance centers around their belief that Akpabio has become a “rubber stamp” for the presidency, potentially hindering his ability to effectively carry out his duties.

However, their agenda extends beyond the removal of Akpabio. According to sources familiar with the matter, these senators are also plotting to reshape the Senate’s leadership to be less favorable to the presidency, thereby creating a challenging environment for the incumbent president. This ambitious plan includes the establishment of a new political party, spearheaded by a high-ranking senator from the North West, who is rumored to be eyeing the presidency in the next election cycle, set for 2027.

The formation of this new political party is seen as an attempt to disrupt the dominance of existing political parties, notably the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and offer Nigerians an alternative choice in the upcoming elections.

The seeds of this political maneuver were reportedly sown during a clandestine meeting in Kwara State, where the idea of the new party was first conceived and agreed upon. Subsequently, these senators have continued their discussions in Saudi Arabia, where they are said to be finalizing their plans for Akpabio’s impeachment when the national assembly reconvenes.

To build public support for their cause, these senators are leveraging the country’s current economic challenges and the situation in neighboring Niger Republic. They aim to rally fellow senators by portraying Akpabio as ineffective in addressing these critical issues and failing in his duty to hold the presidency accountable.

A series of recent incidents has further fueled the discontent against Akpabio. His contentious allocation of leadership roles in various Senate committees drew criticism and eroded trust among his colleagues. Additionally, a viral video in which he seemingly suggested that the Clerk of the National Assembly had distributed funds to senators for their holidays stirred controversy and led to calls for his impeachment by civil society groups like the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA).

HURIWA, in a statement, demanded that Akpabio step aside and subject himself to an investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) for potential violations of relevant laws regarding allowances. The organization has emphasized the urgency of addressing this matter without further delay.

The coming weeks will undoubtedly be filled with political intrigue and maneuvering as these senators work towards their goal of reshaping the Senate’s leadership and potentially altering the course of Nigerian politics in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
