President Tinubu Faces Legal Challenge in Supreme Court Over 2023 Presidential Poll

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a stern warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging a thorough investigation into the alleged payment of N585.2 million. The funds, intended for vulnerable individuals in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos, and Ogun states, are believed to have been directed into a private account.

In a letter dated January 6, 2024, SERAP emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in public spending. The organization called on Tinubu to direct the Attorney General of the Federation and anti-corruption agencies to probe the matter promptly.

The letter stressed that paying public funds into private accounts raises concerns about impropriety and potential wrongdoing. SERAP urged the government to identify and disclose the names of individuals suspected of receiving the funds, emphasizing the importance of bringing any wrongdoers to justice.

Highlighting the constitutional and legal obligations to ensure compliance with financial regulations, SERAP expressed concern about the historical lack of transparency in the allocation of funds for poverty alleviation programs. The organization also called for the publication of details regarding the spending of public funds from the National Social Investment Program (NSIPA).

SERAP set a seven-day deadline for the government to respond and take action. Failure to do so, the organization warned, would result in legal proceedings to compel compliance with their request.

As the deadline looms, the public awaits a response from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the potential legal implications should the investigation not be initiated promptly.
