In a swift and firm response, the Sokoto State Government has categorically denied allegations by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) regarding a supposed plan to dethrone His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III. The state Commissioner for Information and Societal Reorientation, Hon. Sambo Bello Danchadi, dismissed the claims as entirely false and without basis.
Hon. Danchadi emphasized that the state government has no intention whatsoever of deposing the revered monarch. He highlighted that the legal framework governing the appointment and disposition of traditional rulers in Sokoto State remains unchanged. The allegations were described as an unwarranted attempt to stir controversy where none exists.
The controversy erupted when the Executive Director of MURIC, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, raised alarms on Monday, suggesting that the Sokoto State Government might be plotting to depose the Sultan. This assertion was made against the backdrop of recent events in Kano, where 15 traditional rulers were removed for various offenses. Prof. Akintola expressed grave concern over what he described as a deteriorating relationship between the Sokoto State Government and the Sultan.
MURIC’s statement underscored the dual role of the Sultan, who is not only a traditional leader but also the President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, thus making him a pivotal figure in the spiritual life of Nigerian Muslims. The organization warned that any attempt to dethrone the Sultan would be met with strong resistance from the Muslim community across Nigeria.

The Sokoto State Government’s unequivocal denial aims to dispel any rumors and reassure the public of their respect and support for the Sultan. As tensions simmer, it is hoped that all parties involved will seek constructive dialogue to maintain harmony and uphold the revered status of traditional and religious institutions in Nigeria.
