Sokoto Governor Renames Road After Seyi Tinubu

Sokoto Governor Renames Road After Seyi Tinubu

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu, has ignited public criticism by renaming a road in the state after Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu. The road, formerly known as “Pepsi Road,” was slated for commissioning on June 3 by Katsina State Governor, Umaru Dikko Radda, but the event was postponed.

The decision to rename the road “Seyi Ahmed Bola Tinubu Road” quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing widespread condemnation from residents and online users. Many questioned the rationale behind honoring Seyi Tinubu, who they argue has not made significant contributions to Sokoto or Nigeria.

Local resident Salisu Ahmadu expressed dissatisfaction, stating, “The governor overlooked many distinguished indigenes of Sokoto and instead named a road after the president’s son, who has no ties to Sokoto or the northern region.”

Online reactions mirrored this sentiment, with users expressing disappointment in the governor’s decision. An individual with the username @UncleAnass commented, “This is how @Ahmedaliyuskt is denigrating the name of Sokoto with his lack of capacity and sheepishness. Imagine naming a road after Seyi Tinubu. Not even the Tinubu self. Mtschew. This is so denigrating. This is really pathetic. Allah ya isa.”

Despite holding no official position in his father’s administration, Seyi Tinubu has been a prominent figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and has accompanied his father on several foreign trips. However, his presence at official meetings has been contentious, as he was previously barred from attending a Federal Executive Council meeting.

Attempts to reach Abubakar Bawa, spokesperson for the Sokoto governor, for comments were unsuccessful.

The renaming of the road has sparked a debate about the criteria for naming public infrastructure and the influence of political connections in such decisions.
