Currently, the SMEDAN registration portal (https://smedanregister.ng) is for SMEDAN registration only, not for direct CAC registration. What’s happening is that SMEDAN is collecting MSME data first, and then partnering with CAC to handle the free business name registration for those selected under the joint initiative.
Here’s how it actually works (based on the government’s previous approach and official process updates):
Contents
1. SMEDAN Registration Comes First
You must first register your business with SMEDAN via their MSME database.
This is the first stage — it’s where you provide your business details (name, type, location, size, etc.).
Portal: https://smedanregister.ng
Once you complete this step, you’ll get a SMEDAN number confirming your registration.
2. CAC Registration Comes Later (for Selected Businesses)
After SMEDAN’s data collection, they will select eligible MSMEs and forward their details to the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
CAC then processes free business name registration for those selected.
In some cases, SMEDAN contacts the shortlisted applicants via email or SMS to:
- Confirm your business details, and
- Guide you through completing your CAC registration (through CAC’s own portal).
So you don’t apply directly on the CAC website yourself for this program — you must first be registered under SMEDAN’s MSME database.

3. What You Should Do Now
- Register your business at https://smedanregister.ng.
- Keep your SMEDAN number safe.
- Wait for notification (via email or SMS) when CAC registration begins for selected participants.
If you already have a SMEDAN number from a previous registration, you can log in to update your business information to improve your chances of selection.
