The impending appointment of a new head coach for Nigeria’s Super Eagles has stirred discussions regarding whether the next coach should be indigenous or foreign. Historically, all 12 indigenous coaches who have led the Super Eagles hailed from the southern part of Nigeria. Salisu Yusuf, for instance, boasts an impressive track record and profound understanding of the intricacies of football management. He has worked with various clubs and has a perfect record in interim roles. Yet, he has been denied the chance to helm the Super Eagles.
Under the leadership of Ibrahim Musa Gusau, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has an opportunity to rectify this longstanding imbalance. Zoning or rotating the head coach position could promote unity and fairness, ensuring that every region feels adequately represented.
