Super Eagles Job: Hervé Renard Demands N253 Million Monthly Wage

The Nigerian football community is buzzing with excitement and apprehension as the possibility of Hervé Renard becoming the next coach of the Super Eagles looms large. Renard, a highly sought-after French coach with accolades including AFCON victories with Zambia and Côte d’Ivoire, has presented the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) with a monumental financial challenge. His demand? A staggering monthly salary of $180,000, which translates to approximately N253 million in Nigerian Naira.

According to a top NFF official, negotiations have hit a significant hurdle due to Renard’s salary expectations. “Yes, the NFF has made contact with Renard for the Super Eagles job, but the biggest stumbling block is that he is demanding a salary of $180,000 a month, which in Naira is almost close to 300 million,” the official disclosed. This demand would make Renard the highest-paid coach in Nigerian football history, posing a substantial financial burden that the NFF may struggle to meet.

The financial strain is exacerbated by competing offers from other nations. Egypt has reportedly offered Renard a lucrative $1.9 million annual contract, while his name has also been linked to coaching positions in other countries, including the United States. This international interest not only highlights Renard’s market value but also underscores the fierce competition the NFF faces in securing his services.

This situation mirrors past challenges with foreign coaches. José Peseiro, the previous Super Eagles coach, had to accept a significant pay cut to continue his tenure until the delayed AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire. Starting at $70,000 per month, Peseiro’s salary was later reduced to $50,000 amid financial difficulties that sometimes led to delays in payment.

Sports Minister John Enoh has reiterated that funding for a foreign coach falls within the NFF’s purview, emphasizing the federation’s autonomy in financial decisions. However, the minister’s stance highlights the complex balancing act the NFF must navigate between ambition and fiscal prudence.

As the NFF deliberates on Renard’s candidacy, Nigerian football enthusiasts await a decision that could shape the Super Eagles’ future. The outcome will not only impact the team’s coaching stability but also serve as a litmus test for the federation’s financial management and strategic priorities.
