In a remarkable ascent, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have surged 14 places to claim the 28th spot in the latest FIFA rankings following their impressive performance as runners-up in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The team, now boasting 1,522 points, showcased their prowess on the global stage, earning recognition for their achievements.

The February FIFA ranking, published on the world football governing body’s website, solidifies the Super Eagles as the third-placed team in Africa, trailing behind Morocco and Senegal. The upward movement reflects their dedication and stellar performances during the AFCON tournament.

Cote d’Ivoire, the newly-crowned African champions, have reaped the rewards of their continental triumph on home soil, securing the 39th place after a commendable climb of 10 spots. Meanwhile, South Africa, the AFCON second runners-up, climbed 8 spots to the 58th position, showcasing the competitive nature of the tournament.

Notably, Egypt, Cameroon, and Ghana experienced a decline in rankings following their early exits from AFCON 2023, with Angola emerging as the biggest climbers, jumping 24 places to the 93rd position after reaching the quarter-finals.

In the broader global context, Qatar, the two-time Asian Cup winners, claimed the 37th spot after a significant rise of 21 places, accumulating the highest points tally of 92.04. Their successful defense of the continental crown on home soil contributed to this historic achievement.

Several other teams recorded impressive performances, including Equatorial Guinea, South Africa, Cabo Verde, Namibia, and Mali, showcasing the intense competition and evolving dynamics in international football.
