In a firm stance against misrepresentation, the Nigerian Senate on Thursday refuted claims that it had suspended deliberations on tax reform bills, emphasizing its commitment to legislative due process and national interest.
The rebuttal followed reports suggesting a halt in the consideration of the tax reform bills, allegedly to address public concerns. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, speaking under Point of Order 42 during plenary, clarified that such assertions were both incorrect and misleading.

Setting the Record Straight
Bamidele expressed his concerns about the reports, noting that they misinterpreted the Senate’s legislative process.
“Nowhere in our votes and proceedings was it stated that we suspended or withdrew deliberations on the tax reform bills,” he asserted. He explained that the bills, transmitted from the executive arm through the Office of the President, remain on course for consideration. “Only the executive can withdraw these bills, as they are not private member bills,” he added, emphasizing the structured nature of the legislative process.
He further explained the Senate’s procedural actions, including the referral of the bills to the Finance Committee. The committee was given a six-week deadline to provide a comprehensive report that balances diverse concerns in the interest of national progress.
Addressing Public Concerns
Acknowledging public anxiety surrounding the bills, Bamidele encouraged Nigerians to trust the legislative process. He highlighted that open discourse and consensus-building are integral to parliamentary proceedings.
“It’s normal for stakeholders to raise concerns. The committee is tasked with addressing these concerns comprehensively to ensure the bills align with the overriding public interest,” he said.
Resisting Intimidation
In a strong warning against external pressures, Bamidele underscored the Senate’s independence, stating that any attempt to intimidate the legislature would be undemocratic. “We will not be distracted. The public must understand our role in fostering a robust legislative process,” he remarked.
Senate President’s Remarks
Senate President Godswill Akpabio echoed Bamidele’s sentiments, emphasizing that legislative work is guided by conscience and national interest, not influenced by social media or external narratives.
Akpabio clarified that the bills, having passed second reading, remain active and are undergoing further consultations and public hearings through the Finance Committee. He also addressed confusion about an internal Senate committee, noting that it was distinct from the Finance Committee and intended to enhance the process.
The Path Ahead
The Senate’s handling of the tax reform bills underscores its commitment to transparency, dialogue, and the principles of democracy. While public concerns are being addressed, the legislative body has made it clear that its processes will not be undermined by misinformation or undue pressure.
This development reinforces the importance of understanding the legislative framework and trusting the Senate to balance competing interests for the greater good of the country.
