The Attack

The terrorists infiltrated the community at around 10:30 p.m., opening fire sporadically to create chaos and fear. According to a local resident, the terrorists managed to abduct 10 females and two males from his household alone. “In total, they abducted 26 people from the community,” he stated, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Role of Informants

The local resident attributed the success of the attack to informants within the community. He alleged that these informants collaborated with the terrorists, sabotaging government efforts to combat such criminal activities. One of the terrorists was even heard exchanging pleasantries with an informant, indicating a deep-rooted network of collaboration. “The informants include even those in our community. One of the terrorists was even heard exchanging pleasantries with an informant, telling him ‘today we’ve come to your hometown’,” he revealed.

Official Response

Abdullahi Sani Safana, Chairman of Safana Local Government Area, confirmed the abduction of 22 locals, although some managed to escape. He explained that the terrorists took everyone by surprise by wearing Abaya, a traditional dress worn by women in the area. The local police, along with soldiers stationed in the area, have launched a rescue mission.

Community Reaction

Abduljalal Haruna Runka, Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, expressed his dismay over the lack of prior information regarding the terrorists’ movements. He mentioned that previously, they used to receive information that helped thwart such attacks, but this time, all channels were blocked. “We are going back to the drawing board to analyse the situation. To know why we couldn’t get the information,” he stated.

Moving Forward

This incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures and better intelligence gathering to prevent future attacks. The collaboration between local informants and terrorists poses a significant challenge that requires immediate attention. Authorities must strengthen community trust and encourage locals to report suspicious activities to thwart such nefarious plans.

Conclusion

The kidnapping in Runka community is a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges in Katsina State and the broader region. Immediate and effective action is crucial to rescue the abducted individuals and restore a sense of safety among the residents.
