TETFund to Establish 72 Specialized ICT Centers in Nigerian Institutions

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced plans to set up 72 specialized Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centers across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria. Bridging the Digital Skills Gap

Recognizing the critical role of digital proficiency in today’s economy, TETFund’s Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, highlighted the project’s focus on areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, robotics, and software development. He emphasized that these centers will provide hands-on training, ensuring that graduates possess the competencies sought after by modern employers.

Echono stated, “These days, nobody is looking at your BSc or PhD. They want to know your proficiency. Can you code? What talents do you have? These are the things employers are interested in.”

Expanding Access to ICT Training

Integrating ‘Learn to Earn’ Opportunities

Beyond technical training, TETFund is introducing programs that enable students to engage in outsourcing jobs while still in school. After undergoing proper online training and obtaining relevant certifications, students will be able to participate in real-world projects, effectively integrating learning with earning.

Echono explained, “We are introducing initiatives where even students, when they are in school—we call it ‘learn to earn’—can begin to do outsourcing jobs after going through some proper kind of training online and they can get certificates.”

Investing in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET)

In recognition of the vital role of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in national development, TETFund is investing heavily in infrastructure and training programs for skilled professionals. This initiative aims to address the nation’s need for skilled artisans and boost economic growth by training electricians, welders, fabricators, and solar panel technicians.
