The earthquake struck Dingri County, a high-altitude area in the Xizang Autonomous Region, at precisely 9:05 am local time. The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) measured the quake at a magnitude of 6.8, while the US Geological Survey reported it as a magnitude 7.1. This discrepancy aside, the quake was one of the most powerful to hit the region in the past five years.

Eyewitness accounts and video footage captured the immediate aftermath: buildings reduced to rubble, streets littered with debris, and residents scrambling for safety. Surveillance footage showed shoppers fleeing from violently shaking aisles as items crashed to the floor. The devastation was particularly severe near the epicenter, with over 1,000 homes suffering varying degrees of damage.

Rescue Efforts Underway

Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the urgency of rescue operations, calling for “full-scale search and rescue efforts” to minimize casualties. Local authorities have deployed resources, including rescue teams and disaster relief supplies such as cotton tents, quilts, and high-altitude survival gear.

In Dingri County, where temperatures plummet to minus 18 degrees Celsius at night, providing warmth and shelter has become a top priority. Despite the harsh conditions, rescuers continue to search for survivors amidst the debris.

The Impact Beyond China

The earthquake’s tremors were not confined to Tibet. Neighboring regions in Nepal and India also felt the quake’s force. In Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, and areas near Mount Everest, residents reported strong shaking. Fortunately, no casualties or significant damage have been reported in these areas so far.

India’s Bihar state also experienced tremors, but authorities have confirmed no injuries or structural damage.

A History of Seismic Activity

Tibet, situated along the Himalayan mountain range, is no stranger to seismic activity. The region lies on a major tectonic faultline where the Indian plate pushes against the Eurasian plate. This geological collision not only gives rise to the Himalayas but also makes the region prone to earthquakes.

While Tuesday’s quake is the strongest in the region in recent years, it follows a series of deadly seismic events in China. In December 2023, a magnitude 7.0 quake in northwest China killed 148 people, while a January 2024 quake near the China-Kyrgyzstan border resulted in three deaths and numerous injuries.
