Nigeria’s Role in Content Policy Violations
In the third quarter of 2024, Nigeria ranked among the top 50 countries where policy-violating content originated. With 147.8 million videos globally removed during the period, these 50 nations accounted for 90% of the total. TikTok attributed these removals to violations spanning critical areas such as integrity, authenticity, privacy, security, and mental health safety.
This revelation reflects the platform’s enhanced scrutiny on content originating from Nigeria and other high-activity markets, as it aims to uphold its commitment to a safe online environment.
Global Efforts Against Fake Accounts and Underage Users
While video removal dominated headlines, TikTok’s efforts against fake accounts were equally significant. A staggering 214.8 million accounts were deactivated in Q3 2024. Key findings include:
- 187.3 million fake accounts terminated.
- 24.3 million accounts linked to users under 13 years old removed, ensuring compliance with age restrictions.
- An additional 3.2 million accounts deleted for unspecified violations.
TikTok acknowledged that the fluctuating metrics stem from persistent external threats, including automated systems designed to manipulate engagement. These measures, while challenging, are part of TikTok’s ongoing strategy to safeguard user trust and engagement.
Combating Fake Engagement and Spam Activities
TikTok’s proactive moderation extended beyond videos and accounts. In Q3 2024, the platform took the following actions:
- Removed 1.3 billion comments and 1.1 billion likes for being spammy or artificially generated.
- Suspended 12.2 million live sessions for policy violations.
- Deleted 57.2 million fake followers, often acquired through unauthorized tools.
These figures reflect the platform’s continuous improvements in detecting and eliminating inauthentic behavior.
Advertising Violations: A Decline in Non-Compliant Ads
TikTok also reported a drop in the number of ads removed due to violations. From 2.2 million ads in Q2 2024, the figure fell to 1.9 million ads in Q3 2024, marking an improvement in advertiser compliance. TikTok reiterated its policy that ads and advertiser accounts must adhere to its Community Guidelines, Advertising Policies, and Terms of Service.
This effort aligns with TikTok’s goal to foster transparency and ensure a seamless advertising experience for users and brands.
The Bigger Picture: Legal Challenges and Global Scrutiny
Despite its enforcement measures, TikTok faces increasing legal and regulatory challenges. In October 2024, 13 U.S. states and the District of Columbia filed lawsuits against the platform, accusing it of failing to protect young users. The lawsuits claim TikTok’s algorithms are intentionally addictive, exploiting children’s vulnerabilities to maximize profits.
These allegations highlight growing concerns about the mental health impact of prolonged social media use, raising questions about the effectiveness of TikTok’s moderation strategies.
Why It Matters
TikTok’s efforts underscore the complexity of moderating a platform with millions of active users. The challenges of balancing growth with safety and compliance are immense, particularly as countries tighten regulations on tech companies.
For Nigerian users, these statistics offer a reminder of the critical role content creators play in maintaining online spaces that are safe, responsible, and respectful of community guidelines. TikTok’s stringent policies are not just a response to external pressures but a proactive step to ensure its platform remains a trusted space for users worldwide.
