Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed praise for his successor, President Bola Tinubu, stating that Tinubu has performed well during his nine months in office. Buhari acknowledged the challenges of governing Nigeria, describing it as a complex country. The comments were made during a meeting with the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and the management team of the Nigeria Customs Service in Daura, Katsina state.
Tinubu has faced criticism for some of his economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of exchange rate windows, which have led to issues such as galloping inflation, economic hardship, and the depreciation of the naira. Buhari, however, defended Tinubu’s performance, urging citizens to endure the economic challenges and support the current administration’s policies and programs.

During the meeting, Buhari mentioned that Nigeria is a tough nut to crack, emphasizing the complexity of governing the country. He thanked the customs officials for their visit and appreciated Tinubu’s efforts, stating, “I thought Tinubu has done very well. Nigeria is so complex. Really, there isn’t much anybody can do.”
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adeniyi, expressed gratitude to the former president for his support of the NCS Act 2023, which granted the customs service expanded authority to implement policies aimed at revenue generation and facilitating trade. Adeniyi also mentioned President Tinubu’s directives to return seized trucks carrying food items at the border to the traders, hoping they would contribute to the Nigerian markets.
This is not the first time Buhari has remarked about the difficulty of governing Nigeria. In a previous interview in November 2023, he mentioned the challenges of dealing with a populace that closely monitors leaders and constantly demands competence.
