In a move aimed at reducing government expenses and enhancing the efficiency of Nigeria’s participation in international events, President Bola Tinubu has directed a significant reduction in the size of the country’s official delegation to the upcoming 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, scheduled for September 2024. This directive reflects the administration’s commitment to prudent management of resources and the need to focus on essential diplomatic engagements.

The directive was made public by Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, during a one-day retreat organized by the State House management in Abuja. The retreat, which brought together heads of government agencies under the supervision of the State House, aimed to reinforce the institutional mechanisms for effective governance and service delivery.
Gbajabiamila emphasized that the decision to limit the delegation size is part of a broader strategy to cut down on unnecessary expenditure and ensure that only officials with direct responsibilities at the UNGA will be part of the Nigerian delegation.
“During recent protests, concerns were raised about the reduction in the cost of governance. The President has made it clear that this administration will not tolerate the misuse of official delegations for personal gain. If you do not have a specific role at the UN General Assembly, you are not to travel to America. This is a directive directly from Mr. President,” Gbajabiamila stated.
A Commitment to Prudent Governance
The reduction in delegation size is not just about cutting costs; it also signifies a shift towards more responsible governance. The Tinubu administration is keen on addressing the public’s concerns about the cost of governance and ensuring that public funds are used effectively and transparently.
Gbajabiamila hinted at forthcoming policy announcements designed to enhance government operations’ efficiency and responsiveness. He urged all agencies under the State House’s supervision to adhere strictly to statutes, regulations, and presidential directives, emphasizing the need for coherence and collaboration in implementing President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
Strengthening Institutional Mechanisms
The retreat served as a platform to foster greater coordination among government agencies, particularly those under the direct oversight of the State House. Gbajabiamila noted that such coordination is not optional but essential for the success of the government’s objectives and for meeting the expectations of the Nigerian populace.
“As we work together towards achieving the goals of the Renewed Hope Agenda, it is crucial that we do so with a united front. Coordination is not just a choice but a necessity for effective governance,” he added.
Ongoing Commitment to Governance Reforms
Gbajabiamila also highlighted the continuous nature of governance reforms, pointing out that retreats like this will be an ongoing exercise to ensure that government processes remain adaptive and responsive to the evolving needs of the nation.
He called on the State House management and the chief executives of agencies under its supervision to lead by example, ensuring full compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and policies. “We must demonstrate excellence in our adherence to the Public Procurement Act, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria Act, the Finance Act, and other related statutes. Compliance with civil service rules, especially regarding recruitment, promotion, and presidential approvals, is non-negotiable,” Gbajabiamila concluded.
Conclusion
President Bola Tinubu’s directive to slash Nigeria’s delegation to the UN General Assembly reflects a broader commitment to governance reforms aimed at reducing costs and enhancing the efficiency of government operations. As Nigeria prepares for the 79th session of the UNGA, this move underscores the administration’s determination to prioritize national interests and ensure that the country’s participation in global events is both meaningful and cost-effective.
