Tinubu Urged to Free Over 1.3 Million Nigerians in Indian Prisons

Over 1.3 million Nigerians imprisoned across India’s 28 states need immediate diplomatic intervention, says Ohanaeze Ndigbo chieftain Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro. He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to address their plight.

Mazi Isiguzoro highlighted that many of these detainees are victims of systemic challenges, such as strict immigration policies and racial discrimination, which often target genuine students, medical tourists, and businesspeople. “Our call for action is for those unjustly detained without fair trials, not those serving legitimate sentences,” he clarified.

Addressing the Crisis

The Ohanaeze leader described the figure as alarming, stating that India houses more Nigerian prisoners than any other nation. This issue, he said, demands immediate diplomatic action to ensure justice and humane treatment for those unjustly detained.

Strengthening Nigeria-India Ties

Mazi Isiguzoro also urged President Tinubu to explore opportunities for partnerships with India in technology, energy, railways, and infrastructure, which could help Nigeria’s economic recovery. He emphasized the importance of including Nigeria in the BRICS economic bloc to enhance financial stability and trade using the Naira.

The situation presents both a humanitarian challenge and a chance to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and India. By addressing the concerns of imprisoned Nigerians and fostering strategic collaborations, Tinubu can create a meaningful impact both domestically and internationally.
