Union Bank Reaffirms Commitment to Environmental Restoration on World Environment Day

Union Bank has underscored the importance of preserving and restoring the global habitat through sustainable environmental practices. This message was conveyed during an event organized in partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation to commemorate this year’s World Environment Day.

Held on June 5, 2024, in Lagos, the program brought together various stakeholders, including environmental rights activists, international partner agencies, corporate institutions, government agencies, and students from select secondary schools. The gathering focused on deliberating and engaging in activities to mark World Environment Day.

A key highlight of the event was a tree-planting exercise involving numerous participants and stakeholder representatives. This activity aligned with this year’s theme, “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” advocating for the rejuvenation of land affected by deforestation, erosion, and desertification both globally and specifically in Nigeria.

During the program, Patricia Iwhewhe, Head of Citizenship and Sustainability at Union Bank, emphasized the critical need for environmental preservation. She highlighted that land degradation and erosion are pressing issues that cannot be ignored by stakeholders and policymakers. Iwhewhe called for collective action to restore and reclaim degraded land.
