U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein has called for an immediate de-escalation of the ongoing cross-border conflict between Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Israeli forces, a situation that has intensified since the onset of the Gaza war. Speaking in Beirut, Hochstein emphasized the urgent need for diplomatic solutions to end the hostilities.
“The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has gone on for long enough,” said Hochstein. “It’s in everyone’s interest to resolve it quickly and diplomatically — that is both achievable and it is urgent.”

The tensions escalated after Hezbollah, a powerful Iran-backed group allied with Hamas, intensified its attacks on northern Israel following the killing of one of its senior commanders by an Israeli strike. In response, Israel has continued its military actions in southern Lebanon, including a strike that killed a Hezbollah fighter on Monday.
During his visit, Hochstein met with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a key ally of Hezbollah, and discussed the current security and political situation in Lebanon. The envoy highlighted the possibility of a ceasefire in Gaza as a means to also de-escalate tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border.
“This is a serious time and a critical moment,” Hochstein stated after meeting Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, describing their discussion as “excellent.” Mikati called for an end to the “ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon” and a return to stability on the southern border.
Hochstein’s diplomatic efforts come as Hezbollah claims to have conducted over 2,100 military operations against Israel since October 8, following Hamas’s attack that initiated the Gaza conflict. The violence has resulted in significant casualties, with at least 473 people killed in Lebanon, including 92 civilians, and 26 fatalities in Israel, comprising both soldiers and civilians.
