Victor Osimhen, the star Nigerian striker, has reportedly turned down a transfer to Chelsea due to a significant reduction in his proposed salary. According to Sky Sport Italia, the Premier League club offered Osimhen a deal worth €4 million per season, with an additional €4 million in performance-related bonuses. This offer was a sharp contrast to his current €10 million annual salary at Napoli, a reduction the striker found unacceptable.
The bonuses were reportedly tied to Chelsea’s performance, including €2 million for qualifying for the Champions League and another €2 million based on Osimhen’s goals and appearances. Given Chelsea’s recent struggles, with the club only managing to qualify for the Conference League last season, Osimhen was skeptical about the likelihood of achieving these targets. This uncertainty, combined with the significant pay cut, led to his refusal of the offer.
Osimhen had anticipated a major move in the final hours of the transfer window and was in negotiations with two clubs. However, both deals fell through, leaving the striker in a difficult position. Napoli, frustrated with the situation, are reportedly considering freezing Osimhen out of the squad unless a new offer comes in from the Saudi Pro League before their transfer window closes on September 2.
Osimhen is also said to be upset with Napoli for not finalizing a deal with Al-Ahli earlier this summer, where he could have earned €40 million per season. Napoli’s decision to demand an additional €5 million in add-ons to the €80 million offer scuppered the potential transfer.
With no clear path forward, Osimhen’s future remains uncertain, and he may find himself training separately from the Napoli squad. All eyes are now on the Saudi Pro League to see if they will make a late move to rescue the situation.
